Saint-Séverin Church: Gothic Beauty in the Heart of the Latin Quarter

materialicons-sharp-854 1 Rue des Prêtres Saint-Séverin Paris

The Église Saint-Séverin is one of the oldest and most atmospheric Gothic churches in Paris, located in the vibrant Latin Quarter.

Originally founded in the 6th century and rebuilt after Viking invasions, the church evolved significantly during the 13th and 14th centuries, adopting the elegant Flamboyant Gothic style that defines its character today. Its soaring vaults, intricate stained-glass windows, and richly detailed chapels reflect centuries of artistic and spiritual development.

One of its most distinctive features is the remarkable twisted column in the apse, a rare architectural element that adds to the church’s unique identity. The interior also houses Renaissance and Baroque artworks, alongside the renowned pipe organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, still used for prestigious concerts.

Despite damage during the French Revolution, Saint-Séverin was carefully restored in the 19th century, preserving its historical and artistic significance.

Surrounded by the intellectual energy of the Latin Quarter, near the Sorbonne and its iconic cafés, the church offers a refined blend of history, architecture, and culture—ideal for travelers seeking authentic and enriching experiences in Paris.

Our curated tours are available in English, Spanish and French, ensuring a seamless and premium cultural experience.
